I actually don't know. I've never been someone who plans annihilation. A little part of me leaves my body and goes, How did you state this life, this house, those dogs, that married man, those kids, that piece of work? Everything I've tried to command and manipulate has worked, only information technology hasn't been transformative. My feel has taught me to keep the channels open up and get rid of obstacles—showtime by accepting that they exist and then by doing something nearly it.

Yes. I got sober. I had understood for a long time that my relationship with drugs and alcohol was a trouble. Just because I was successful in so many ways, it disguised itself as recreation and fun. Still, I had a gnawing awareness that there was something bigger at play. So my awareness and then acceptance of the problem was a very large deal for me. I'g very lucky that I've been sober for nearly 13 years.

Another recent first for y'all was running the Santa Monica Archetype, a 5-1000.
I ran that race to face my fear. Everywhere I go, people say to me, "Yous're peachy. I dear y'all." Somehow all of that felt fraudulent in that I couldn't run a mile. The longer you avoid a fear, it merely grows.
Did you have a trainer?
Nope. I prepared for it by myself and I ran it by myself. To train, I used an iPhone app called Couch-to-5K. I cried at the finish line. That 5-M was a big bargain for me. (Y'all can run, too! Meet how to railroad train for your kickoff 5K.)
What other "first" would yous love to try?
If there was a 100% guarantee that I wouldn't get hurt, I'd bound out of a plane in a heartbeat. I'd be the first person at the airfield.
You and your husband, Christopher Guest, have two kids: Annie, who's 26, and Tom, 16. Now that they're older, are you starting to explore dissimilar ways to spend time with each other?
We play golf game together. That's been a first. My hubby calls me the Hammer because I can hit a golf brawl pretty far. We've been home together for a considerable amount of time, which has been lovely. We've fallen into the pleasure of simultaneous reading.
What have you read lately?
Terminal summertime, my sister and I went to Federal republic of germany, Denmark, and Hungary. When I travel, I like to read one piece of fiction and one of nonfiction that are set in the identify I'k headed. So when I get there, I can get, Oh, yeah. I read a harrowing book set up in Hungary in the 2nd World State of war, called The Invisible Bridge, and Wallace Stegner's The Spectator Bird, a lovely story that takes place in Denmark.
There have been some great motion-picture show roles for women lately, like those in Hope Springs and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Do yous think it's a trend?
Obviously, there'south a huge audience dying for amusement that they can relate to, and it'due south not Transformers. (Check out these .)
Ane of our favorite moments in your book is when Frankie jumps off the cliff into a lake. What was your showtime metaphorical jump?
For me, the leap was and is to stay out of our kids' way so that they accept their chance to jump and not be tethered to you. Parenting is so hard because it'southward the but time in your life when the goal of a relationship is separation.
Does it take backbone to make new friends when you are an adult?
I brand friends very hands everywhere I get. If we go in an elevator, my family will look at me and get, "Please don't. Please." It's just my nature. With real friends, people whom I get intimate with, it's harder. I've had a beautiful opening of wonderful new friendships in my life in the past 10 years. I don't have the patience for trivial friendships anymore. I can't hear the same complaints nigh the ex-hubby. It'south heartbreaking to me to think that we can't learn from our developmental mistakes and so grow.
